The stepping stones of the river stones, in various shapes and sizes, create a flow as a single path, and light the yukimi lanterns at the end of the path. The way the local stones are arranged as they are, while still representing a path, is a feat of traditional Japanese landscaping techniques. The Yukimi Lantern, the main feature of the lantern, is the only lantern that reflects the light on the surface of the water, creating the effect of floating lights. The white gravel represents the surface of the water, creating a karesansui (dry landscape) reminiscent of the floating lights of the lanterns. The flow of water can be seen flowing from the upper right to the lower left by the water stone in the back right corner. The sand pattern on the gravel makes the flow stand out.
