A rice farmer. Dog walkers. People who pass by each other on the narrow paths of Izumo. This is the scenery of everyday Izumo. In Japan, the evening greeting is “Good evening. It means “this evening. In the daytime, it means hello. There is no greeting for the still bright evening in between. In Izumo, there is a greeting in between. It is “Banjimashite. It means evening. It is unknown why this greeting was born. However, looking at this scenery in the evening, it must have been born because it is necessary for Izumo people to call out to each other as they pass by.
