Yamagata’s Tezui-bachi represents the rock surface of a mountain stone as it is, a stable scenic stone that sits densely in the deep mountains. The texture is representative of Japanese landscape stone with moss growing on it. The water hole is dug at the top of the stone, and it rises slightly higher than the other stones, which makes the stability of the tezuibachi stand out even more. The front stone, stepping stones, candlesticks, and bathtub stones are made of river stone, and when wet, they take on a dark, shiny, black appearance. The contrast with the white gravel makes the stone wash basin stand out even more, and the central water basin has an even greater presence. By placing the stepping stones in front of the right side, the blank space between them stabilizes the overall balance, and the overwhelming sense of stability gives the viewer a sense of tranquility and peace of mind.
